Everybody loves going out to see a good movie every now and then! My friends and I went out to see the movie: “Ready Player One”. There was one horrible part in the movie: my diabetes.
Insulin
A lot of the foods that are often eaten during movies have a lot of carbs in it. Take popcorn, for example, the average small bag of movie theatre popcorn contains about 40 carbs! That means that I have to take insulin for it. So I just need to take a shot real quick and then just continue eating as normal! No…. not really. It’s a lot more complicated than that. Here’s what really happened. After getting dropped off, we walked around and found our seats. I had to keep a close track of time to see when to take my insulin. When it was finally time to take my shot, I stepped out of the theatre to test my sugar. Luckily my blood sugar was right on target! I then cleaned myself with alcohol and started to give myself my shot. After I was done taking insulin I cleaned up, and tracked 15 minutes and ate as usual.
Reactions
As I gave myself my shot I noticed some mixed reactions from people walking by. Some people started to walk faster when they passed me, some gave me disgusted looks and some turned their heads in the complete opposite direction. Someone about my age was giving me a really dirty stare as I was giving myself my shot, so I just starred right at him
and smiled and waved to say “yes I am giving myself a shot, and no I am not letting it ruin me”. I honestly don’t care how people take my Type One Diabetes, but the reason why I care about how people react to this kind of stuff is for the people who aren’t as strong. Imagine if you just got diagnosed with a disease and while having to do something for it, somebody stares you down like you just confessed to murder. That would feel awesome right? And that is why it is important to educate everyone about this debilitating disease so that people know that what we are doing is so we can survive and fight the plague known as T1D.
