Tis’ the Holiday Season… Featuring T1D!

Christmas was great as usual! This being my very first Christmas with T1D, so this Christmas was just a tad bit unorthodox.

What we did this Christmas

This Christmas had lots of FFF: friends, family, and fun! We baked some lemon and Italian cookies. We also prepared a lot of food for Christmas dinner. We went over to our cousin’s for Christmas eve to bake and cook even more. Me and 2 of my younger cousins had fun outside playing kickball despite the freezing cold weather and the fact that it was extremely difficult to move around in our winter coats. It was so cold that when we came in, my glasses were completely steamed up! We then spent the entire Christmas day at our cousin’s after opening presents. We had fun there but the weather was so dire that we could not play outside. But we did fry a turkey outside in peanut oil. My younger cousin and I took the opportunity to throw those exploding “popper” things at each other. We then sat down for Christmas dinner and ate turkey, cookies we had just baked, and a various assortment of other foods. We finally sat down on the floor and played a very fun yet frustrating Christmas game. You are given a present to unwrap. Simple right? WRONG! You have to wear oven mitts as you unwrap your bounty. The person next to you in the circle is constantly rolling two dice. Once doubles are rolled, you must pass on the present to the next person and the process repeats. Whoever unwraps the present first gets to keep the gift! I got 2 presents in total. We then went home and I cleaned my room (it was so messed up, that it looked like a bomb went off in there!).

How T1D Affects It

T1D affects many things in my life and this would be no exception.  When we baked the cookies we had to get the carbohydrates for each cookie. The process goes like this: measure out the ingredients, do math to figure out how many carbs are in each ingredient used, add all of the ingredient carbs together, and finally divide the total carbs of every ingredient by the amount of cookies made. Before I ate dinner, I still had to take insulin. I will admit it does feel a little bit akward taking insulin at my cousins’ too. I also need to be careful whenever I play outside as cold can make my blood sugar plummet.

We hope you had a great holiday season!!!!
